Earlier today, Elon Musk, the founder, and CEO of SpaceX unveiled the first picture of SpaceX space suits. These suits are developed for NASA commercial crew program. Musk says, in his Instagram post, that the suit in the picture is not just a mockup, and they actually work. The white colored suit seems to have found the right balance between esthetics and function, something Musk acknowledges very hard to do. Additionally, the suit is already tested to double vacuum pressure, meaning they’re not meant for spacewalks but to be worn by astronauts during the ride SpaceX’s Dragon Capsule. Earlier this year, Boeing unveiled their own space suit design that astronauts will wear on route to the International Space Station. However, unlike Boeing, who partnered with spacesuit specialist David Clark Company to design the suit, SpaceX chose to develop its suit in-house. Elon Musk stated he will reveal more details regarding the spacesuit in the coming days, along with additional images. Here are four iconic spacesuits.

A7L Apollo spacesuit is the primary pressure suit worn by NASA astronauts for Project Apollo, including the first manned mission to the Moon. The spacesuit was designed and built by ILC Dover. Initially, the suit wasn’t fire resistant, but after the deadly Apollo 1 fire, the suit was upgraded to be fire-resistant and given the designation A7L. Neil Armstrong described his Apollo 11 A7L space suit as "tough, reliable and almost cuddly.

Ah, that time when the geniuses in NASA decided to assemble a team of weird deep sea oil drillers to save the planet earth. Although many of us may differ on the overall quality of the Michael Bay flick, the spacesuit worn by Bruce Willis and co is nothing short than iconic, especially with the ‘free, independence, for all mankind’ badge.

2001: A Space Odyssey

It’s almost impossible to find a space suit design that’s more iconic than the one from Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey. The suits designers worked close with space and tech industry, something that was unique in those days. As a result, they got a lot of details right. The production quality and design were so good that many people were even convinced that Kubrick faked the Moon landing.

The Martian

What made The Martian, the novel and the movie, unique was how realistic the story and the science were. The spacesuit in the movie was designed with the focus on how a real space suit for future Mars mission will be like. Costume designer Janty Yates worked with NASA engineers after finding inspiration from NASA's prototype Z1 and Z2 spacesuits.
