BlackBerry Z30: 5-inch Super AMOLED display, 1.7GHz Snapdragon S4 Pro, 2,880mAh battery and BB 10.2

While there have been leaks aplenty over the summer, BlackBerry has now officially announced the successor to its all-touch Z10. Say hello to the Z30.

To be honest, it matches up fairly closely with what we've seen already. Externally, it measures 140.7mm x 72mm x 9.4 mm. Inside, it packs a 5-inch 1,280 x 720 Super AMOLED display, a dual-core 1.7 GHz Snapdragon S4 Pro chip, 2GB RAM, Adreno 320 GPU and 16GB of storage. That's all powered by a 2,880mAh battery.

In terms of cameras, there's an 8-megapixel rear facer which captures video at 1080p, and a 2-megapixel front facer that manages 720p video. In terms of connectivity, it'll support 4G LTE, dual-band WiFi a/b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.0 and NFC. It's the first phone to ship with version 10.2 of the BB 10 OS, which offers a few notable software upgrades. So, there's BB Priority Hub-a bit like Gmail's Priority Inbox, applied across all your communication-and broad enhancement to message previews and BBM, among other things.

Currently there are no pricing details available. It'll first land in the Middle East and UK sometime next week, but should be available before the holidays in the US. [Engadget]

Busy July

The second half of every year is usually not considered to be very busy as far as smartphone announcements are concerned, but that notion is quickly changing. Apple’s iPhones and the Samsung Galaxy Note range were the only notable flagship offerings that would break cover during the second half of the year, but from this year we have the OnePlus 2, while Motorola also releases its flagships in the second half of the year. This month in particular has been very busy with the arrival of the OnePlus 2, the Moto X Style, Moto X Play and the Moto G. Regional player YU also released the Yureka Plus this month, so we have seen a myriad of handsets in July. At the same time, we have also seen some existing handsets making the headlines this month for the wrong reasons, so we have a look at them all.
