A few days ago, we had heard the reports of BlackBerry planning to give some sops to its distributers in India, aiming to give a push to handset sales in India.

Well, luckily for the consumers, the rumours have turned out to be true for once. For, the price of BlackBerry Q5, launched only a few months back, has been slashed to Rs.19,990 now. This amounts to almost 20 percent drop in the price of the smartphone. The Canadian smartphone maker is dubbing this drop in the price as “The New Year Bonanza”.

The smartphone was launched in July 2013 for Rs. 24,990, but of late you could find it retailing for as low as Rs 22,999 on various online portails.

Commenting on the price drop, BlackBerry India Director ( Distribution) Sameer Bhatia said, "The New Year Bonanza aims at providing a powerful mobile device, with cutting edge BlackBerry 10 OS at an affordable price point to the consumers".

However, slashing the price of newly launched devices is nothing new for BlackBerry as the handset maker had earlier cut down the price of its flagship QWERTY smartphone – BlackBerry Q10 by over 13 per cent. Post the cut, BlackBerry Q10 now retailing for Rs 38,990.

Furthermore, in September 2013, BlackBerry had slashed the price of the BlackBerry Z10 by 31 per cent to Rs. 29,990.

Well there is no denying that BlackBerry has been going through a rough patch lately and the disappointing debut of BlackBerry 10 smartphones hasn't hepled things either. At the same time, going for a BlackBerry Q5 at Rs. 19,990 not really a bad deal as 2013 saw really few QWERTY device launches. It is a sturdy device that gives you a comfort of a full physical keypad and packs the versatility of BlackBerry 10.2 OS. For more on the BlackBerry Q5, do read our review .
