​Online retailers to check identity of customers before shipping

After eCommerce giant like Flipkart and Snapdeal suffered heavy losses owing to false mailing addresses and increasing delivery rejections, online retailers have started seeking help of companies that can make them identify a customer and check for fraud before shipping.

As per an Economic Times report: In online transactions, the liability rest with the merchants.

"We identify the name and address through mobile number and credit card information," said Chirag Bakshi, chief executive of Zumigo, a startup backed by Wells Fargo and Intel Capital. Zumigo is in talks with merchants and bureaus in India to help them identify a customer and check fraud.

While Zumigo has joined hands with Equifax and other retailers in the US; but in India, it may find it difficult to tie up with credit bureaus.

According Mohan Jayaraman, MD of Experian Credit Information Company of India, "We are regulated under Credit Information Companies Regulation Act (CIRCA), which does not allow us to share information with anybody other than specified user."
