Many wouldn't consider the 2014 BMW M4 to be an "old" model. But given what we've seen in the automobile industry since then, this is one notion that's going to stick.
BMW's future, the i8 is a hybrid automobile that can compete with the best in the industry. So naturally a contest between the two would be fitting. Why? Because an old vs new comparison is never going out of fashion, especially if it involves two popular cars.
So to conduct this test, the folks at AutoBild.tv (Germany) decided to hold a short drag race between the two vehicles. The results are for you to see in the video.
Quite understandably, the M4 was no match for the i8's 128-horsepower electric motor which is paired to a 228-horsepower turbocharged three-cylinder motor. The car managed to reach 0-60 mph (about 96 km/h) in just 4.2 seconds, which is remarkable but not surprising given the kind of spec that the i8 boasts of.
However, the M4 has an engine with dual turbochargers which reaches the 0-60 mph in just 4.2 seconds. So in theory, the two devices should be on level pegging as far as speed and acceleration are concerned. However, that's not the case as you can see from the video.
The reason for this is the insane amount of wheel spin that you saw with the M4, while the i8 cruised through comfortably thanks to its all-wheel-drive system, which essentially means there's a motor over each axle to provide power to the wheels.
It's clear here that while the BMW i8 and the M4 might boast of the same performance on paper, the i8 is a beast in every sense of the word. It also looks like one, doesn't it?
