2014 is looking out to be the year of custom UI. We had already informed you that the forthcoming smartphone by Micromax (read: Micromax Canvas 5) will come with a custom UI. There are not too many details in regards to what Micromax will be adding in.

Now we hear is that Xolo, too is working on a custom UI for their phones. Well the first smartphone with this custom UI will debut in January 2014.

When Gizmodo India quizzed Sunil Raina of Xolo about this UI, he informed us that the objective of this UI will be to make their smartphones more user friendly. In addition to this, this user interface has been devised keeping in mind, the Indian users.

He elaborated that in America there is a significant number of people who are left handed, where as in India people usually use their mobiles with their right hand and these are the kind of things that have been kept for this UI.

So guess this UI ain't going to be just skin deep.

We even asked Raina if the older smartphones by Xolo will get an update to get to experience this UI. So he informed us that for now the plan is only to bring in this UI on just one device and gauge the customer response on the same and only after that they will be able to evaluate how things will shape up going forward.

All in all, looks like the Indian smartphones makers are also now trying to add their signature touch in the Android experience much like their international counterparts. Now that Micromax and Xolo have already announced these plans, we are pretty sure the other fishes in the pond too will look at playing catch up soon.

So we ask you, are you happy about this trend?
