Daenerys questions Varys’ loyalty

The episode literally opens with an enraging storm in Dragonstone where Daenerys and Co. are huddled up in the war room. Daenerys is already feeling Dragonstone isn’t her home as Tyrion tells her that she was born on such a stormy night. She realises that there are “not so many lions” on a glance at the map table. “If Viserys had three dragons and an army at his back he’d have invaded King’s Landing already,” Daenerys says. In what will possibly be counted as one of the best one-liners of Season 7, Tyrion reassures her, “Conquering Westeros would be easy for you. But you’re not here to be the queen of the ashes.”

He then reminds her that the Tyrell’s and Dornish in the South are already with her which makes her remember that she didn’t thank Varys properly for doing that.

In the next few moments, Lord Varys just manages to ditch the eye of the storm as Daenerys questions his loyalty to her. Given that the Master of Whisperers doesn’t have a great background, Tyrion supports him. “Incompetence should not be rewarded with blind loyalty,” Varys argues. “You wish to know where my true loyalties lie? Not with any king or queen, but with the people.” And we all know Daenerys cares about her people. So, Varys wins here but not before getting a warning, that if he betrays the queen, she will burn him alive!

Just then a messenger comes up to Grey Worm who then informs everyone present that a red priestess from Asshai has come to meet the mother of dragons. We know the red priestess in question who is searching for the prince who was promised. The next few moments all but confirm the theory that the word prince in the statement has no gender in High Valyrian and hence translates to “The Prince or Princess who was promised will bring the dawn.” Daenerys likes the prophecy but is cut short of Melisandre’s revealing that she will have a role to play, “as does another”. The red priestess urges Daenerys to send a raven to Winterfell and summon Jon Snow, the King in the North.

And she does send one, asking Jon to come and bend the knee in front of the one true queen.

In Winterfell, Jon receives the raven and gets counsel from Sansa and Davos on whether or not he should go and meet with Daenerys. Sansa recalls how Tyrion wasn’t like the other Lannisters and was kind to her. Davos, on the other hand, sees the army of the Unsullied, and three dragons who might just prove to be helpful in defeating the army of the dead.

Later in the episode, Sam’s raven from the Citadel revealing the presence of dragonglass in Dragonstone arrives. Jon once again addresses the other lords who don’t favour Jon’s decision to go and meet Daenerys. Sansa questions him once again but this time, the King in the North has an ace up his sleeve. He announces that in his absence, the North is Sansa’s.

Before taking off for Dragonstone, Jon visits the Crypt of Winterfell where Petyr Baelish creeps him by his sudden arrival. He tells Jon that he delivered the bones of Ned Stark to Catelyn as a gesture of goodwill from Tyrion Lannister. Then basically, Petyr digs his own grave by revealing to Jon that he loved “cat” like Ned did and now he loves Sansa like he loved Catelyn. And that’s all it takes to piss a brother off. Jon pushes Petyr to the wall and chokes him, warning not to touch Sansa else he’ll kill him himself.

In Dragonstone, Olenna Tyrell, Yara Greyjoy, Ellaria Sand along with Dany and Co. are figuring out a way to attack King’s Landing when Daenerys tells them that she doesn’t want to be a queen of the ashes, a line she picked up from Tyrion at the start of the episode. Olenna, Yara and Ellaria urge Daenerys to lay siege on King’s Landing. Tyrion lays down the plan which involves the Tyrell and Dornish armies to surround King’s Landing while the Unsullied soldiers will attack Casterly Rock and take it. Everyone agrees to the plan and supports Daenerys in the plan of attack.

Later, while having a private word with Olenna, Daenerys promises that Cersei will pay for whatever she has done. Olenna then advises her to ignore Tyrion as much as she can because he’s a clever man. “You’re a dragon. Be a dragon,” she asks of Daenerys.

Arya on her way to King’s Landing visits a pub where she finds her old friend Hot Pie. He tells her that her brother Jon is now the King in the North as she gorges on the food and ale. After finding out about this news, she changes course and starts heading back to Winterfell.

Later on her way, she’s encountered by a pack of wolves who are led by a huge direwolf. Arya immediately recognises the direwolf as Nymeria and pleads her to come with her to Winterfell, their home. “That’s not you,” Arya says as Nymeria walks away with her pack.

A shocker of a sequence where Yara, on her way to Sunspear with the Dornish women are suddenly attacked by their uncle, Euron Greyjoy ends the episode.

He comes onboard one of the ships and starts killing people. A bloody fight ensues as the attack lights up nearly all of Yara’s ships. Euron kills Obara and Nymeria with their own weapons to justify how badass he is followed by his men capturing Yara and Ellaria. Euron puts an axe on to Yara’s neck, asking Theon to come and save her. Theon remembers his torture days and jumps off the ship instead of fighting Euron.

Cersei meets with some of the other lords and bannermen of House Tyrell, which happens to be in an open rebellion against the Iron Throne. She speaks to them about the horrors that will besiege the kingdom if Daenerys takes the Iron Throne and asks them to participate in the war to come. Randyll Tarly is among the present lords and asks the Queen about how she plans to stop the three dragons, to which Qyburn assures that he’s working on a solution. After their little meeting, Jamie persuades Randyll to fight with them and after they’ve won, he can be the new Warden of the South.

Meanwhile, Qyburn takes Cersei to one of the halls of the Red Keep where he introduces her to a new weapon which is a mechanised spear made by the artillators and blacksmiths of King’s Landing. Cersei pulls a lever that disengages the spear which strikes the skull of Balerion proving that they might just have found the way to defeat the dragons.
