In a world where artists are dishing out everything they have in their repertoire to pander to the audience, a DJ from Kolkata is keeping it simple. Known for his minimalist approach behind the deck, 8-Bit Culprit's music is deep, meaningful and has a story to tell.

8-Bit Culprit is Faraz Ehsan's techno house project. He started DJing professionally from a young age of 15 and even had a regular gig at a local nightclub by 2008. But it's funny how the name itself came to be.

"My upbringing has more or less been pretty old school, be it the kind of music I grew up to or my thought process.. Also, I was an extremely mischievous child growing up, usually blamed for things i did not do and not blamed for things I did," Ehsan told Gizmodo India in a candid chat.

He shuffled through a bunch of other names but 8-Bit stuck as it resonated perfectly with him. The 8-bit signifies the old school upbringing while the culprit is there for obvious reasons.

The 8-bit also signifies the minimalism in his music. As a producer, Ehsan follows a 'less is more' process. His music emotes what he is feeling at the moment and after all, art is all about expression. Over the years, 8-Bit's music developed into a definitive sound that is dance-floor oriented but also deep and meaningful.

"After trying and stripping down the techno/deep techno space of house music, I found a sense of intimacy with a sound and decided to take it forward from there. I'm absolutely loving this melodic/melancholic space of music and I definitely wanna go in deeper and explore it," Ehsan told indicating how he zeroed down on his unique sound.

He channeled electronic music legends like Sphongle, Trentemoller, Perfect Stranger, Modeselektor who inspired his early experiments. Immediately after finishing school, he moved to Bangalore to pursue audio engineering and developed into an electronic music producer.

In the decade that followed, 8-Bit went on to play at eclectic music festivals like Go:Madras, CTRL ALT DANCE and more.

His production now lets him create his own sound which can be defined to be 'space techno' sprinkled with copious amounts of depth and hypnotism. In 2016, 8-Bit's released 'Slugger' with Dharmalogy on Soupherb records.

Fast forward to 2017, 8-Bit once again shared the stage at Go:Madras with his vision of telling a story. And in line with his style, his setlist includes tracks from JOBE, Max Cooper, Lunar Plane and more.

"I think I'll never get tired of playing JOBE - Eunis (Original Mix) but the other tracks that are on the top of my list in recent times are SHFT - Catharsis, Max Cooper - Distant Light (Rival Consoles Remix) and Lunar Plane, Paradoks, Ubbah - Fluctus," Ehsan confessed.

But his most anticipated gig is still to come. Later this year, 8-Bit Culprit is going to take the stage at Wonderflip Festival near Udaipur. The festival that revolves around giving people the chance to visit a fantasy land will let artists groove our long sets that is bound to get the audience immersed into the music. And 8-Bit is going to play an all original set.

"Expect to dance! Jokes apart, the aim is to try and play 100% of my original content for the maiden edition of this magical festival! The process is underway, keeping my fingers crossed to have it all ready by November," Ehsan let us know.

With the calendar already crammed with a lot of festivals, Wonderflip is aiming to break the monotony by handpicking artists that has their own respective stories to tell. The idea is not to book mammoth headliners that is usually the most commercially viable thing to do. This time around, this will be all about the music.
