For the better part of the year, we were unsure whether Xiaomi will indeed launch a flagship phone. But around a month back, Xiaomi boss Jai Mani tweeted that the company is bringing its most exciting phone in India. And the day is here. The Mi Mix 2 has debuted in India. Xiaomi now joins the likes of Samsung and Apple in offering a bezel-less phone in India. For Rs 35,999, the phone will take on the OnePlus 5 head on and for what it’s worth, it does stand a chance to become the next flagship killer.

The Mi Mix 2 is one of the most distinctly designed phones out there. Owing to its edge-to-edge display, the Mi Mix 2 can be recognised from a mile away. The phone has been designed by Philippe Starck, a renowned French designer who is a pioneer in industrial design. He designed Steve Job’s yacht and the first Mi Mix phone and that itself is a statement convincing enough to shell out the money.

The phone is made out of ceramic curved on all four sides and features a gold lining around the camera and the fingerprint sensor. It strikes a balance between strength and aesthetics. On the front is all screen with the front camera located at the bottom left.

The Mi Mix 2 features a 5.99-inch IPS LCD display with 18:9 aspect ratio. The screen is surrounded by a aluminium alloy frame and the curved edges provides a better hand feel. By enlarging the display, Xiaomi had to find a place to put all the other hardware on the front. So it put them underneath the display. There is an ultrasonic proximity sensor and cantilever piezoelectric ceramic acoustics that delivers sound from underneath the display.

The Mi Mix 2 is Xiaomi’s flagship phone of the year. And it does indeed come with flagship grade hardware specs. The Mix 2 is powered by Qualcomm’s top of the line processor coupled with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. There are additional features like dual analog digital converter that provides professional audio recording. 4x4 MIMO with 4 antennas for better 4G service and there is support for 43 network bands, the most for any smartphone.

The Mi Mix 2 also features a kickass camera. While there’s no dual camera combo, the snapper on the back features an IMX386 sensor, which Xiaomi also used in the Mi 6, with 1.25um large pixels and four axis optical image stabilisation. These features combines to provide a stellar low light performance.

On the front is a 5-megapixel selfie shooter.
