Flipkart's 'Festive Dhamaka Days' sale is on! The e-commerce giant is offering heavy discounts of up to Rs 14,000 in exchange for mobiles like Xiaomi Mi A1, Redmi Note 4, iPhone 7 etc. In fact, the ad campaign by Flipkart claims that you can buy Mi A1 in just Rs 999.

The creative offers are designed to make consumers believe that it's a really good deal. If you consider the price of Xiaomi's latest Mi A1, which is Rs 14,999 and you get Rs 14,000 off with exchange offer it sounds like a steal deal. However, these exchange discounts have a catch. The huge discounts that are marketed in the campaigns are not really possible to score.

Following Flipkart, other leading e-commerce companies have started offering the exchange bonus as well. What the ad campaigns don't mention is, the Rs 14,000 exchange that Flipkart mentions is the maximum discount you can get for exchanging your older smartphone. There is a very slim chance of that actually happening when you make the purchase.

The older mobile phones unless it is a newer generation iPhone device, it will not fetch such a high price under Flipkart's exchange scheme. Users need to enter their device make, model and IMEI number to make a purchase under 'Buy with Exchange" offer. All e-commerce companies have determined the price for older devices based on their make and model.

If you are making the purchase on Flipkart, you can check the pre-determined value of your phone. Click on the 'Buy with Exchange' option on the product page and a separate pop-up will open asking you to enter the make, model, and IMEI number. You can check the predetermined value by entering just the device make and model.

Flipkart has a long list of terms and conditions for 'Buy with Exchange' scheme. The brand and model needs to match with the data entered by you. The company representative does a thorough testing of your old device while collecting it. The display should not have any cracks, the body panel and phone must not have any major dent. The device needs to work for minimum 30 seconds without connecting to the charger.

So if you are currently using a budget smartphone like Redmi Note 3 or Note 4, the maximum discount you can fetch for buying Xiaomi Mi A1 is between is Rs 3500. Other models of budget smartphones get only Rs 1500-2000 in discount. The marketing gimmick used by Flipkart is certainly fetching good traffic to the site.
