Here's how artificial intelligence (AI) will affect the jobs
There is so a big concern about the potential impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI) on jobs and the economy. While the future of jobs is uncertain, one thing is for sure- the advances in the technologies like AI and machine learning will certainly have a profound effect on the skills of employees.
The high-performing AI systems have evolved to train the machines to program instead of having human resources to write the programs. In some industries, artificial intelligence is already replacing the human jobs. An industry like automobile manufacturing has come a long way in last few decades. About 90% of the manufacturing is now done by robotic machines.
On the other hand, the advanced technologies like AI and machine learning are taking away the kind of jobs that require the physical efforts. The same tech advancements are creating new jobs and increasing the employees' productivity. AI is certainly going to affect more and more jobs over time as the sophistication level of the technology improves.
The AI technology has potential to disrupt any industrial sector. Which ultimately means that the AI technology can affect any jobs that require the skills that the technology has acquired in last few years. According to Tom Mitchell, a professor of machine learning at Carnegie Mellon University, "Any task performed online where the inputs and outputs of a human decision are captured, is a task amenable to applying machine learning."
Most of the routine workflow is now performed online. Something like approving vacation requests or travel reimbursements requires validation of the pre-recorded data. Training the machine learning algorithm to verify and approve such requests by comparing with the historical data is much easier. It is not just simpler, cost-effective and faster. However, it can take away one job role from an organization.
The top tech companies in the world are exploring the possibilities of AI. The new business models designed for these AI projects are already created new types of jobs. However, these new roles require the IT professionals to train themselves on the latest AI technologies. Most of these new job roles are highly-paid.
If you follow the AI developments, you will realize that most of the AI projects are being developed to increase the efficiency of your work. AI and automation are likely to create new work for everyone in some cases. In other cases, it will create a scenario where less number of people are required for the work.
Some of the popular AI-enabled products are actually adding a lot of value to the users. Mitchell describes the use of AI by the cab booking service, Uber, "the app relies heavily on AI algorithms to schedule where their drivers should be placed, to minimize the wait times of passengers while keeping all the drivers busy." The efficiency created by AI has helped Uber to build a model that creates employment options.
